A Season of Unwanted Headlines for Arshdeep Singh
The 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign has been anything but quiet for Punjab Kings (PBKS) fast bowler Arshdeep Singh. Once celebrated by fans for his infectious energy and humorous social media presence, the left-arm pacer now finds himself at the center of a storm. What was once considered a vibrant personality has, in the eyes of many critics, evolved into a source of recurring professional and social controversy.
The String of Controversies
Arshdeep’s recent troubles are multifaceted, ranging from alleged interpersonal conflicts to serious accusations of discriminatory language. Reports surfaced early in the tournament suggesting a verbal altercation between the pacer and PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer at an airport, a claim that fueled internal rumors. Furthermore, a viral video captured Arshdeep with his rumoured girlfriend, Samreen Kaur, inside the team bus—a direct violation of BCCI protocols regarding player conduct and team travel.
Perhaps the most damaging incident involved a video posted to Arshdeep’s own Snapchat account. In the clip, he was heard referring to India teammate and fellow World Cup winner Tilak Varma as ‘Andhera’ (darkness). This sparked immediate backlash across social media platforms. Critics were quick to highlight that this was not an isolated incident, noting similar remarks previously directed at cricketers Sai Sudharsan and Sakib Hussain, leading to widespread accusations of casual colourism.
Inside the Punjab Kings Camp: The Official Stance
On the eve of the Punjab Kings’ high-stakes encounter against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Dharamsala, the franchise addressed the media. Andrew Leipus, the Head of Sports Science for PBKS, fronted the press conference. When questioned about the persistent drama surrounding Arshdeep, Leipus maintained a measured, professional distance.
Leipus admitted that he avoids the constant noise of social media, preferring to focus on the athlete’s on-field physical condition. “I don’t follow a lot of social media myself, so I know there’s been a bit of chatter behind the scenes of various things going on, vlogging and whatnot,” Leipus stated. He emphasized that, from a coaching perspective, Arshdeep’s demeanor remains stable. “In terms of his behaviour, Arsh is pretty much a flat line. He’s not up or down. He gives his best out there.”
Physical Well-being and Dressing Room Dynamics
Beyond the disciplinary concerns, Leipus shed light on the physical challenges Arshdeep has faced throughout the season. “We’ve been working together a little bit, and looking at his body, there may be restrictions that could be a reason for some of his performances being up and down. We think we’ve hit on a bit of a winner there,” he noted. According to the team management, the pacer has felt significantly better physically over the last fortnight.
Leipus described the pacer as a “very loud person” within the confines of the dressing room—a trait that remains unchanged despite the public scrutiny. While the team acknowledges the need for professional decorum, they are focusing on maintaining a calm environment for their players.
The Broader Issue of Social Media in Cricket
Leipus also used the opportunity to address the pervasive influence of social media on modern cricketers. He suggested that the constant connectivity is becoming a detriment to team unity. “You look across every team, you’ll see guys are sitting there on their phones in the buses. There’s not a lot of chatter going on. It is a problem, I think,” he observed.
Reflecting on the past, Leipus lauded the ICC’s former policy of restricting mobile phone usage, noting that it encouraged genuine human interaction among teammates. He acknowledged that while commercial obligations make total abstinence from social media difficult, the current “always-online” culture is something that needs to be addressed for the sake of player focus and team culture. As the IPL 2026 season progresses, the Punjab Kings will be hoping that Arshdeep Singh can shift the narrative away from his personal social media activities and back toward his contributions on the cricket pitch.
