The Pressure Mounts for Punjab Kings

As the IPL 2026 season reaches its critical juncture, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) find themselves in a precarious position. Sitting in 4th place with 13 points from 12 matches, the team’s recent trajectory has been concerning, characterized by five consecutive losses. Amidst this slump, the spotlight has turned to star left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, whose performances have not mirrored his usual high standards.

Physical Fitness Under the Microscope

Observers noted that Arshdeep did not appear to be his usual self during practice sessions in Dharamshala ahead of the vital clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The concerns were later addressed by Andrew Leipus, the Punjab Kings’ head of sports science, who confirmed that the team has been closely monitoring the bowler’s physical state.

Leipus revealed that the coaching staff has been investigating potential biomechanical restrictions within Arshdeep’s body. “We’ve been working together a little bit and looking at his body to see if there are any restrictions that might be a reason for some of his performances being up and down. We think we’ve hit on a bit of a winner there. He’s been feeling a lot better in the last couple of weeks, physically,” Leipus stated.

Performance Struggles and Technical Challenges

Arshdeep Singh has accounted for 13 wickets in 12 games this season; however, his impact has been diluted by a high economy rate. Tactical analysts have pointed out a lack of precision in his death-overs yorkers and a difficulty in landing bouncers in effective areas. These technical lapses have been identified by the PBKS management as a significant contributor to the team’s sudden drop in form after an initially promising start to the tournament.

Addressing the ‘Noise’ and Dressing Room Morale

Beyond the physical challenges, there has been significant chatter surrounding Arshdeep’s off-field activities, including his social media presence and vlogging. Critics have suggested these distractions may be impacting his focus, particularly while bowling on the flat, batting-friendly pitches that have defined much of the season.

Despite the external criticism, the internal sentiment remains supportive. Leipus was quick to defend the pacer’s character and work ethic. “I know there’s been a bit of chatter behind the scenes of various things going on—vlogging and whatnot. In terms of his behaviour and attitude, Arsh is pretty much a flat line. He’s not up or down. He gives his best out there. He’s a very loud person in the dressing room. That hasn’t changed. He’s very calm,” Leipus added.

Furthermore, Leipus highlighted the leadership duo of captain Shreyas Iyer and Arshdeep Singh, noting that both players have maintained exceptional calmness under pressure. The sports scientist also reflected on the broader issue of technology in professional sports, noting, “One of the best things the ICC ever did was take phones away. When you’re in that team environment, it’s not an issue. It’s outside when it becomes an issue. I’ve heard rumours. I think potentially it is something that needs to be addressed.”

The Path Forward for PBKS

With the race for the playoffs intensifying, the Punjab Kings require their primary strike bowler to return to his peak capacity. Whether the physical adjustments implemented by Leipus and his team will yield the desired results on the field remains to be seen. As the franchise prepares for the final stretch of the season, the focus will undoubtedly remain on whether their star players can silence the critics and translate their internal resilience into match-winning performances.

The coming games will be a litmus test for both Arshdeep Singh’s physical recovery and the team’s collective ability to overcome their mid-season crisis. The Punjab Kings faithful will be hoping that the combination of tactical refinement and renewed fitness will lead to a turnaround in fortunes as they seek to secure their place in the top four.
