The End of an IPL 2026 Journey for SRH

The 2026 Indian Premier League season was a rollercoaster for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) faithful. Despite a stellar league stage campaign that saw them finish third on the points table with nine hard-fought victories, the ultimate prize remained elusive. Their journey was brought to a premature halt on May 27 at the New Chandigarh Stadium, following a 47-run defeat in the Eliminator. While the fighting spirit led by captain Pat Cummins was evident, the loss exposed critical gaps in the team’s composition that the management can no longer ignore.

Why a Squad Overhaul is Inevitable

Under the leadership of Pat Cummins, several individuals like Ishan Kishan, Abhishek Sharma, and Heinrich Klaasen undoubtedly stepped up to deliver match-winning performances. However, the overarching theme of the season was a lack of consistency, particularly within the bowling attack and the middle-order batting unit. To challenge for the title in 2027, SRH management is expected to adopt a more clinical approach to their squad construction, which may involve making the difficult decision to release big-name players who failed to justify their price tags.

The Liam Livingstone Dilemma

Perhaps the most glaring underperformer regarding expectations was Liam Livingstone. Acquired for a substantial sum of INR 13 crore, the England all-rounder was brought in to serve as a cornerstone of the team’s middle-order aggression. Unfortunately, the investment did not yield the desired dividends.

Livingstone’s contribution was limited to just two innings, yielding a mere 15 runs at a disappointing average of 7.50. When a franchise invests such a significant portion of their auction purse into a marquee overseas signing, they require reliability in high-pressure moments. Given his limited impact, it seems highly probable that SRH will look to reallocate those funds toward more consistent overseas talent in the upcoming December auction.

Harshal Patel and the Bowling Struggle

The bowling department was another major concern for the Orange Army, and the performance of Harshal Patel epitomized these struggles. Signed for INR 8 crore, the veteran pacer was expected to bring composure and wicket-taking ability to the death overs. Instead, he endured a forgettable campaign, playing five innings without claiming a single wicket.

Perhaps more concerning than his lack of wickets was his economy rate of 10.83, which placed significant pressure on the rest of the bowling unit. For a team that struggled with consistency, this level of output is untenable. It is widely expected that the franchise will choose to move on from Harshal, opting instead to invest in younger, more economical pacers who can grow within the system.

The Uncertain Future of Jaydev Unadkat

Jaydev Unadkat, another experienced left-arm pacer brought into the fold for INR 2 crore, is also facing an uncertain future with the franchise. While he did manage to claim four wickets during his four appearances, his economy rate of 10.91 was simply too high for a team looking to stabilize their middle and death overs.

Age is also a factor, as Unadkat will be approaching 36 by the time the 2027 season commences. In an era where the IPL is becoming faster and more physically demanding, the infusion of young, energetic talent is becoming a priority for franchises across the board. IPL 2026 could very well represent the final chapter for Unadkat in the Sunrisers jersey.

Building for 2027

The decision to release these players is not merely about trimming the fat; it is a strategic move to reset the team’s trajectory. By freeing up their budget, Sunrisers Hyderabad can enter the next auction with the flexibility to fill the specific voids that prevented them from reaching the final this year. As the team looks to move past the disappointment of their Eliminator exit, the focus now shifts entirely to scouting and recruitment. The coming months will be critical for management as they attempt to balance the core of their successful 2026 campaign with the fresh reinforcements needed to finally bring the trophy back to Hyderabad.
