Robin’s 147 powers Agrani Bank to victory, Gazipur win thriller by 1 wicket
High-Scoring Drama in the DPL
The Dhaka Premier League (DPL) once again lived up to its reputation for delivering competitive and high-scoring encounters. In a day defined by individual brilliance and nail-biting finishes, two matches stood out for their intensity. The standout performance of the day saw Robin’s 147 powers Agrani Bank to victory, Gazipur win thriller by 1 wicket, providing fans with a memorable showcase of domestic cricketing talent.
Agrani Bank Triumphs in Run-Fest
At the BKSP Ground No. 3, spectators were treated to an absolute run-fest as Agrani Bank Cricket Club took on City Club. The match saw a combined total of 653 runs scored, highlighting the excellent batting conditions and the sheer determination of both sides. Batting first after losing the toss, City Club set a formidable target of 326 for 6 in their allotted 50 overs.
The backbone of the City Club innings was an exquisite knock by Abdullah Al Mamun, who smashed 151 runs off 145 balls. His masterful display was well-supported by Mizanur Rahman, who contributed 58 off 63 balls, and Anamul Haque Anam, who chipped in with a brisk 44 off 33 balls. Agrani Bank’s bowling attack faced a stern test, with Robiuul Haque and Sandip Roy sharing 4 wickets equally between them to keep the target within reach.
The chase was characterized by a clinical approach from the Agrani Bank batsmen. Mahfijul Islam Robin was the hero of the day, anchoring the innings with a spectacular 147 off 141 balls. His performance proved to be the difference-maker in a high-pressure environment. He was well-supported by opening partner Shadman Islam, who provided a solid foundation with 78 off 67 balls. Imrul Kayes added a valuable 33, while Nasir Hossain and Shuvagata Hom played essential cameos to maintain the scoring rate. Late contributions from Amite Hasan and Jahid Javed ensured Agrani Bank crossed the finish line with just two balls to spare, securing a 5-wicket win.
Gazipur Group Clinches Narrow Victory
Meanwhile, at the Bashundhara Sports Complex, the drama was of a different nature. In a low-scoring thriller that demanded grit and composure, Gazipur Group Cricketers secured a nail-biting 1-wicket victory over Dhaka Leopards in their Round 8 clash.
Dhaka Leopards struggled to find momentum early on and were bowled out for a modest 153. Shykat Ali fought hard for his 67 off 91 balls, while Zakir Hasan contributed 45 off 56, but the rest of the lineup succumbed to a lethal bowling display by Md Rubel. Rubel was the standout bowler for Gazipur, producing a sensational spell to claim 6 wickets for just 23 runs. Azijul Hakim Rony also played his part, picking up 2 wickets to dismantle the Leopards.
Despite the small target, the chase proved far from comfortable. Gazipur faced constant pressure from the Dhaka bowling unit, led by Moin Khan who claimed an impressive 5 for 34, and Hasan Murad who supported him with 3 wickets. Shovon Moroll led the charge for Gazipur with a solid 63 off 56 balls, while Emon Ali added 31. As wickets continued to fall, the game went down to the wire. Ultimately, Leon Islam held his nerve, staying unbeaten on 14 off 27 balls to guide Gazipur Group home with a solitary wicket remaining. It was a testament to the unpredictable and thrilling nature of the DPL this season, where every run and every wicket carries immense significance.
Reflections on a Competitive Season
The performances witnessed today underscore the depth of talent currently competing in the Dhaka Premier League. From the elegant stroke-play of Mahfijul Islam Robin to the clinical destruction wrought by Md Rubel with the ball, the league continues to serve as the premier proving ground for cricketers.
