The Growing Concern Over IPL Player Conduct

The 2026 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has been defined as much by its off-field headlines as by the thrilling cricket played on the pitch. As the tournament progressed, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) found itself increasingly occupied with a flurry of controversies involving players and franchises. From unauthorized vlogging to alleged breaches of hotel protocol, the scrutiny on the professional conduct of athletes has reached an all-time high.

In response to these incidents, the BCCI issued a comprehensive seven-page advisory to all franchises. This document served as a stern reminder of the standards expected of professionals participating in the world’s most lucrative T20 league. The advisory touched upon sensitive topics, including the potential risks of honey-trapping, the restriction of unauthorized guests in hotel rooms, and a clear directive for franchises to curb the rising ‘reel culture’ and vlogging that has captivated many young players.

Specific Incidents Prompted Official Action

The push for stricter oversight was not without cause. Several high-profile incidents during the 2026 season brought the issue of team discipline into the spotlight. For instance, the Rajasthan Royals faced criticism after team manager Romi Bhinder was spotted using a mobile device in the team dugout during a match, a clear violation of league protocols. Similarly, Rajasthan skipper Riyan Parag drew ire after being seen with an e-cigarette in the team dressing room—an act that directly contravenes local laws regarding vaping in India.

The Punjab Kings also struggled with a reputation for internal instability, marred by rumors of indiscipline and a fractured team environment. Pacer Arshdeep Singh found himself at the center of a storm, facing widespread backlash on social media for his vlogging habits and accusations regarding inappropriate remarks. These incidents created a narrative that the league’s focus was drifting away from pure athleticism and toward digital self-promotion.

Arun Dhumal: Maintaining the Integrity of the Game

Speaking to the media at the sidelines of the Punjab Kings versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru clash in Dharamsala, IPL Governing Council Chairman Arun Dhumal sought to provide clarity on the BCCI’s position. Dhumal emphasized that while the board does not wish to stifle the personal expression of players, the primary objective is to protect the game’s integrity.

“Most of the things that happen on social media, one cannot always be sure about the authenticity or how true they are,” Dhumal noted. “But whatever we need to do in terms of keeping the integrity of the game intact, we do our level best. There is much more that comes into the media than what actually is, so you have to take it with a pinch of salt.”

Regarding the advisory, Dhumal clarified that it was not a new policy shift, but rather a necessary reinforcement of existing standards. He expressed confidence that franchise owners and management teams are well aware of their responsibilities, noting that the health of the tournament relies on a collective effort between the board and the teams.

Is a Social Media Ban on the Horizon?

Perhaps the most pressing question for fans and pundits alike was whether the BCCI would eventually move to implement a total ban on social media for players during the tournament. Dhumal’s personal philosophy on the subject is quite firm, though he remains pragmatic about enforcement.

Reflecting on the impact of digital platforms, Dhumal remarked, “Social media, I would say, is the most anti-social thing. So I’m personally not in favour of social media. I do believe there has to be a lot of socialisation as players and as individuals, but unfortunately, I deem it as the most anti-social thing.”

Despite his personal distaste for the digital landscape, Dhumal ruled out an immediate, sweeping ban. He suggested that players would eventually come to realize the importance of prioritizing human connection and core values over digital metrics. According to Dhumal, as society becomes increasingly inundated with technological interventions, the premium on real-world integrity and relationships will naturally rise. For now, the BCCI remains focused on monitoring behavior and ensuring that the high standards of the IPL are upheld both inside and outside the boundary ropes.
