Bangladesh End 21-Year Wait with Big Win Over Australia

Bangladesh produced a memorable performance to defeat Australia by a big margin and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.

This victory also marked a historic moment. It came 15 years after Bangladesh last played a bilateral ODI series against Australia and ended a 21-year wait for a win in this format against them. Since the famous Cardiff victory in 2005, Bangladesh had not managed another ODI win over Australia until now.

Mosaddek Hossain Shines on Return

The biggest highlight of the match was Mosaddek Hossain’s remarkable return to international cricket. After almost four years away, he came back with a career-best performance at a crucial moment for the team. Batting in a difficult situation, he scored 86 runs off 70 balls with 7 fours and 3 sixes. He also made an impact with the ball, taking two wickets, and added a brilliant catch in the field. It was a complete all-round display and a perfect comeback story.

At the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh posted 284 runs in 50 overs. Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto also contributed with half-centuries.

Australia Fails to Chase

Chasing 285, Australia were 191/9 in 42.2 overs. Rain interrupted play later, and Bangladesh won by 86 runs under the DLS method.

Australia’s chase never settled. They lost Matthew Short on the very first ball, followed by Marnus Labuschagne for just 1. Josh Inglis made 19 before falling to Nahid Rana, who bowled with pace and aggression throughout the match.

Mosaddek and Nahid Rana continued to strike at regular intervals, breaking Australia’s middle order. At one stage, Australia lost five wickets for just 28 runs. Nahid finished with four wickets, while Mosaddek took two.

Cameron Green fought hard with an unbeaten 52, but he had little support from the other end. Eventually, rain ended the match, but Bangladesh were already firmly in control and deserved winners by a big margin.
