The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a comprehensive training program at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Lahore. Designed to address recent inconsistencies, Sarfaraz and Hesson to oversee red and white-ball camps in Lahore throughout the summer months. This initiative is a critical step in refining the skill sets and physical conditioning of the country’s elite cricketers as they prepare for a demanding international calendar.
Camp Structure and Timeline
The red-ball specialists are set to commence their training on Monday, June 8. Following this, the white-ball squad will join the academy on June 15. Once both groups are present, the camps will run concurrently. The red-ball camp is scheduled to conclude on July 10, transitioning into a specific pre-tour camp for the upcoming series against the West Indies, with the team departure slated for July 15. The white-ball camp, conversely, is slated to run until September 18, preparing the team for the T20 Asian Games in Japan and a home ODI tri-series against Sri Lanka and England.
Leadership and Player Development
Head coaches Sarfaraz Ahmed and Mike Hesson are spearheading this development drive, supervising an initial cohort of 49 players. The red-ball camp features 22 players, while the white-ball squad consists of 27 members. The NCA has retained the flexibility to include additional talent as needed, though players currently committed to English county cricket have been excluded from the initial intake. These individuals may be recalled toward the end of the sessions if they emerge as strong candidates for selection.
A notable aspect of the program is the fluidity between the two squads. Coaches will swap players between the camps to ensure well-rounded development. For example, while Shaheen Shah Afridi is primarily listed within the white-ball group, he is expected to engage in technical work to enhance his longer-format bowling capabilities. All participants will benefit from fitness drills, scenario-based practice matches, and personalized one-on-one sessions with both national and NCA coaching staff.

The urgency behind these camps is underscored by recent results. Despite a 2-1 series victory against Australia, the team has faced significant criticism regarding their performance in varied conditions. Furthermore, the squad has struggled in ICC white-ball tournaments, failing to progress past the group stages in multiple recent events, including the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup. Test cricket remains a primary concern, with the team currently sitting eighth in the World Test Championship table, having failed to secure an away Test victory since 2023.
