From U19 Hero to Team Owner: Manjot Kalra Acquires Jaffna Kings
The Journey of a U19 World Cup Hero
Cricket has long been a vehicle for social and financial mobility, particularly with the proliferation of franchise-based T20 leagues. Players ranging from Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja to Yash Dayal and Rinku Singh have seen their lives transformed through the Indian Premier League (IPL). Among the most celebrated success stories from the youth circuit was the 2018 ICC U19 World Cup squad, which saw talents like Prithvi Shaw rise to national prominence. Shaw, alongside teammates like Abhishek Sharma and Manjot Kalra, became an overnight sensation after the team’s triumphant campaign in New Zealand.

For many, the IPL contract was the ultimate validation. The Delhi-based franchise, then known as the Delhi Daredevils, aggressively pursued these U19 stars. While Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Sharma managed to stabilize their professional careers in the years that followed, the path for Manjot Kalra proved to be significantly more complex and disheartening.
The Rise and Fall of Manjot Kalra
Manjot Kalra was once considered one of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket. His performance in the 2018 U19 World Cup final against Australia was nothing short of legendary; his match-winning century cemented his status as a top-tier opening batter. He finished the tournament with an impressive 252 runs across five innings, maintaining a staggering average of 84.00. However, despite being secured by the Delhi franchise for INR 20 lakh, his career trajectory took a sharp downturn.
His professional life faced a major hurdle when he was implicated in an age-fraud investigation by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This resulted in a one-year suspension from Indian cricket in 2020. Although the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) later lifted the ban, the momentum of his early career had already dissipated. By 2021, while he attempted a return to domestic cricket, his appearances were limited to a single Ranji Trophy game for Delhi.
A New Chapter in Cricket Administration
In the years since his departure from the professional playing circuit, Kalra has reinvented himself. He currently manages a YouTube channel titled ‘Second Innings with Manjot Kalra,’ where he engages with the cricketing community by interviewing emerging talents. More recently, he has made a major move into the business side of the sport.
In a significant development ahead of the 2026 Lanka Premier League (LPL), Manjot Kalra, in partnership with entrepreneur Mayank Goel, has successfully acquired the Jaffna Kings. This acquisition marks a major transition for the former cricketer, who now takes on the role of a franchise owner. Expressing his vision for the team, Kalra noted: “Jaffna Kings is a franchise with a strong cricketing identity and a passionate fan base. For us, this is an opportunity to bring together our experience in cricket, youth engagement, sports content and community building to support the next phase of the team’s journey.”
The Legacy of the Jaffna Kings
The Jaffna Kings represent the most successful franchise in the history of the LPL, having secured four titles in five seasons. The ownership history of the franchise has been dynamic. Originally founded as the Jaffna Stallions in 2020, the team faced early challenges due to ownership issues. The Lyca Group subsequently took over in 2021, operating the team for four seasons before their tenure ended due to the failure to fulfill contractual obligations.
With Kalra and Goel’s Sports Commune now at the helm, the team enters a new era. The upcoming LPL 2026 season, which follows a period of suspension, is scheduled to run from July 8 to August 8, 2026. With the player draft set for May 23, all eyes will be on how the new owners shape the squad for the next iteration of the tournament. As the league prepares for its return, the acquisition of such a prestigious franchise by a former player highlights the evolving landscape of cricket management and the diverse paths taken by those who have walked the pitch.
