Virat Kohli Challenged to Yo-Yo Test by Indian Hockey Stars
An Unprecedented Fitness Challenge
Virat Kohli has long been the gold standard for fitness in the world of cricket. At 37 years of age, he moves across the field with the agility of a teenager, a testament to his grueling training regimen and unwavering discipline. However, even the most dedicated athletes face new challenges, and recently, Kohli found himself at the center of an unexpected proposal from some of India’s top athletes in a different discipline.
Indian hockey stars Hardik Singh and Manpreet Singh have issued an open invitation to Virat Kohli and the entire Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) roster to engage in a Yo-Yo test challenge. This proposition has sparked significant interest, pitting the stamina of top-tier cricketers against the renowned endurance levels of India’s professional hockey players.
Understanding the Yo-Yo Test
For those unfamiliar with the rigorous demands of professional sports science, the Yo-Yo test is a sophisticated metric used to evaluate an athlete’s ability to perform high-intensity workouts with minimal recovery periods. It serves as a benchmark for cardiovascular strength, stamina, and aerobic capacity. In the context of sports like cricket, rugby, and football, it is widely regarded as one of the most demanding physical evaluations, often utilized by organizations such as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure players meet elite performance standards.
Kohli’s Remarkable Fitness History
Virat Kohli’s reputation as a fitness icon is not merely anecdotal; it is backed by numbers. While the BCCI maintains a benchmark score of 16.1 for players to pass the Yo-Yo test, Kohli has consistently shattered these expectations throughout his career. Under the strict supervision of the BCCI, he once recorded an astonishing score of 21.6, a milestone rarely reached by any other athlete in the sport. Even at 36, he clocked a 17.2, comfortably outperforming many younger players in the circuit.
Why the Challenge?
The origin of this friendly rivalry stems from a candid interview Kohli gave at the RCB Innovation Lab. Showing immense respect for other athletes, he remarked, “Cricket is in such prime focus in our country that we often overlook other sports. If I am being honest, we aren’t even 15% of the fitness of an Indian hockey player. If the hockey players watch our training sessions, they would laugh because their sport demands far more.”
This display of humility caught the attention of the Indian hockey team. During an exclusive interview with RevSportz Global, Boria Majumdar posed the possibility of a head-to-head fitness competition. Manpreet Singh responded with immediate enthusiasm: “Yes, of course, I invite him openly. Please come with the whole RCB team; our team will be here as well. We can compete against each other.”
Mutual Respect Across Sports
Despite the competitive nature of the challenge, there is a deep sense of mutual respect between the two sporting camps. Both Hardik and Manpreet acknowledged that cricket presents its own unique set of physical and technical challenges. “But their game is also very difficult. The ball comes very fast, right? If we are asked to bat, it will be very tough for us to face a 150kph delivery,” the hockey stars admitted.
Hardik Singh added that such an interaction would be a massive boost for the sporting culture in India. “I think we should do it and it will be very good for the sport. If we interact with each other across sports categories, it will always be a great exchange, so yes, we are looking forward to it,” he noted.
RCB’s Push for IPL 2026 Glory
As this fitness conversation gains traction, Virat Kohli remains focused on the field. RCB has officially qualified for the IPL 2026 playoffs and is currently locked in a tense battle for a top-two finish alongside the Gujarat Titans. The team’s immediate future hinges on their final group-stage match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, scheduled for May 22 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Securing a win in this fixture would guarantee a top-two spot and 20 points, solidifying their momentum as they aim for the title.
Whether or not the Yo-Yo challenge materializes, the dialogue between Kohli and the hockey stars highlights a growing trend of camaraderie and respect among India’s elite athletes, proving that fitness and dedication remain the universal language of success.
