Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a crushing blow to their IPL 2026 campaign on Thursday, May 21, when they were handed an 89-run defeat by Gujarat Titans in Match 66 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The heavy loss marked CSK’s third consecutive defeat, officially ending their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs. Under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad, the five-time champions struggled to find consistency throughout the season, ultimately bowing out of the tournament in disappointing fashion.

Why MS Dhoni Gets a Clean Chit for CSK’s Failure

As fans and analysts dissect what went wrong for the Chennai franchise, former captain MS Dhoni has emerged completely free of blame. The legendary wicketkeeper-batter spent the entirety of the IPL 2026 season on the sidelines, giving him a literal clean chit regarding the team’s on-field performance. Dhoni had been battling a persistent calf strain, which initially ruled him out of the first two weeks of the tournament. Unfortunately, the legendary cricketer was unable to recover in time, marking the first season in his illustrious IPL career where he did not play a single match.

While his absence on the field explains his clean chit, it also highlights the massive leadership and tactical void his injury created. Without Dhoni’s guiding presence behind the stumps and his unmatched finishing ability, CSK struggled to close out tight matches and maintain their trademark composure under pressure.

Ravichandran Ashwin Demands a Reality Check and New Strategy

Speaking on his YouTube channel, former Indian all-rounder and CSK legend Ravichandran Ashwin shared a candid assessment of the team’s current state. Ashwin emphasized that the franchise needs a major strategic overhaul ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, rather than relying on past glory.

Ashwin urged the CSK management to focus on signing high-quality, experienced players, particularly to rebuild their bowling attack. “Honestly, I will say this openly, CSK has to invest in quality. They have to invest in quality cricketers. I mean, make a quality team. With experience. Bowling experience. Variety in fast bowlers. Variety in spinners. A team has to be formed in a good way,” Ashwin explained.

He also delivered a stark truth regarding the post-Dhoni transition, stating that the franchise must adapt to the modern demands of T20 cricket. “This is not Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings. Not at all. That time has changed. And you have to keep in mind that success will come. But it will come slowly,” he added, signaling that the rebuilding process will require patience from both the management and the fans.

Ashwin Points Out Bright Spots: Shivam Dube and Kartik Sharma

Despite the overall disappointing campaign, Ashwin found reasons for optimism in the performances of middle-order batters Shivam Dube and Kartik Sharma, who fought hard in the final stages of the tournament.

Ashwin praised Shivam Dube’s aggressive batting, noting it as one of the few bright spots for Chennai. However, he raised concerns about how the squad was built for their home matches at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. “Honestly speaking, Shivam Dube’s batting was very positive for Chennai. But I have an observation. I think the squad that is picked to play in their home game, in Chepauk, I think it is not suiting them,” Ashwin observed, pointing to a mismatch between squad construction and the slow Chepauk pitches.

Ashwin was also highly complimentary of Kartik Sharma’s technical skills, particularly his ability to tackle spinners. “Kartik Sharma has that ability. He plays the spinner a little late, he plays inside-out shots, he uses his feet in front. Today’s batters, if you count them on one hand, how many have the ability to use their feet while batting?” Ashwin remarked, highlighting Kartik’s rare and valuable skillset in modern T20 cricket.

Looking Ahead to IPL 2027: Rebuilding from the Ground Up

Chasing a massive target of 230 runs against Gujarat Titans, CSK’s batting lineup collapsed, folding for just 140 runs in 13.4 overs. The heavy defeat left them stranded in seventh place on the 10-team points table, with only six wins and eight defeats from their 14 league matches. With 12 points and a dismal Net Run Rate of -0.345, the five-time champions became the third team to be officially eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoffs race, joining Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Mumbai Indians on the sidelines.

The upcoming cycle presents a crucial crossroads for the Chennai Super Kings. To regain their status as title contenders in IPL 2027, the management must heed Ashwin’s advice: move past the Dhoni era, address the squad imbalance at Chepauk, and build a versatile, experienced bowling unit that can perform under any conditions.
