Markram in Line for LSG Captaincy as Pants Tenure Faces Scrutiny

After another lackluster IPL season that ended in early playoff elimination, the Lucknow Super Giants are at a crossroads. Former England captain Michael Vaughan has publicly questioned the leadership of Rishabh Pant, suggesting that Aiden Markram could be the ideal candidate to take over as captain in IPL 2027.

LSG’s Season Unravels Amid Leadership Doubts

Lucknow Super Giants finished at the bottom of the IPL 2026 points table with just four wins from 13 matches. Their campaign, which began with promise thanks to early victories, quickly derailed with a devastating six-match losing streak that extinguished any hope of playoff qualification. Their final defeat came against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur, cementing their status as the first team to be mathematically eliminated from contention.

The team, despite having a strong core on paper, struggled across all departmentsbatting, bowling, and fielding. Even their brief resurgencewon two of three matches mid-seasonwas undone by a heavy loss to the Punjab Kings, leaving them with only a dead-rubber fixture remaining.

Michael Vaughan’s Blunt Assessment

Speaking on Cricbizz, Michael Vaughan didn’t hold back in his critique of the franchise’s leadership structure. While acknowledging that LSG have built a competitive squad, he pointed to a disconnect at the top.

“The leadership just doesn’t look right from the owner to the coach to the captain. It doesn’t quite look together,” Vaughan said, highlighting the pressure on head coach Justin Langer and Director of Cricket Tom Moody.

Vaughan praised the opening combination of Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh and backed Nicholas Pooran at No. 3. But he raised concerns about relying too heavily on overseas players in the top order.

“Do you want all of your top 3 to be overseas players? Probably not,” he noted. This sentiment could influence LSG’s retention and recruitment strategy ahead of the next season.

Why Aiden Markram?

Vaughan floated the idea of Aiden Markram as the next captain, citing his leadership experience and composed nature. Markram, a proven performer in franchise leagues and a former South African Test captain, brings stability and tactical awarenessqualities that have been questioned under Pant’s stewardship.

However, Vaughan also acknowledged the challenge: Markram would be a third overseas player in the top five, which goes against the trend of successful IPL teams that typically rely on Indian centric top orders.

Pant’s Struggles On and Off the Field

Rishabh Pant’s personal form in IPL 2026 mirrored his team’s struggles. Across 13 matches, he managed only 286 runs at an average of 28.60 and a strike rate of around 140, including just one half-century. His shot selection and batting position decisions have drawn criticism, further fueling doubts about his captaincy credentials.

On the field, Pant’s tactical callssuch as batting order shuffles and bowling changeshave been labeled inconsistent and reactive rather than proactive.

What’s Next for LSG?

With only one match left in IPL 2026, Lucknow Super Giants must now turn their attention to rebuilding. The decision on Pants captaincy will likely be one of the most critical calls in the off-season. While releasing him altogether seems unlikely given his star value, a shift in leadership could signal a fresh start.

As Vaughan emphasized, the entire setupfrom coaching to team compositionneeds reassessment. If LSG are serious about contending for the title in the future, a new captaincy directionperhaps under Aiden Markramcould be the first step toward redemption.
