Agarkar: Sooryavanshi ‘picked himself’ in T20I squad, we’ve got ‘high hopes of h’ as rising star earns maiden call-up
A Meteoric Rise to the National Stage
The landscape of Indian cricket is witnessing a historic moment as 15-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi earns a maiden call-up to the national T20I squad. This decision comes as the culmination of back-to-back stellar seasons in the Indian Premier League, where the teenager displayed maturity well beyond his years. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar has been vocal about the selection process, emphasizing that the board had little choice but to fast-track the youngster into the side for upcoming tours in Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games.
The Logic Behind the Selection
Addressing the media regarding the squad announcement, Ajit Agarkar provided insight into the selection panel’s thought process. Agarkar stated, “I think he just has picked himself really. With his performances, he has almost forced us to pick him with how well he has played.” The statistics back this sentiment unequivocally. During the 2026 IPL season alone, Sooryavanshi amassed 776 runs at a staggering strike rate of 237.30, acting as the primary engine for the Rajasthan Royals’ playoff campaign.
Agarkar continued, “For a young kid… I don’t need to talk about how well he is playing. And it’s not just this season. He obviously had a great start to his IPL career last season. To back it up for a young kid in a competition that’s as competitive and has a high-pressure environment, and how explosive he can be and a game-changer that he can be. Like everyone else that has watched T20 cricket in India, we have got high hopes of him.”
Breaking Barriers and Facing Legends
Sooryavanshi’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. At the tender age of 14, he etched his name into the record books by becoming the youngest centurion in men’s T20 history, scoring a blistering 101 off just 38 balls against the Gujarat Titans. What has impressed the selection panel most, however, is not just his ability to score, but his fearless approach against the world’s elite. Throughout the most recent IPL edition, he systematically dismantled top-tier bowling attacks, including established international stars like Jasprit Bumrah and Mitchell Starc.
Managing Expectations and Future Development
While the excitement surrounding the young star is palpable, the management is keen on a measured approach. Agarkar acknowledged the challenges that await the teenager, stating, “I know his age, and how young he is, and how early in his career but two IPLs in a row he has done well. We know what he was doing at the Under-19 level, and that’s probably perhaps a step down to what the IPL is or slightly lower than what senior cricket is. But we can all see what kind of talent he has.”
The selection committee is clearly focused on fostering his growth without overwhelming him. When pressed on the possibility of a transition into the Test arena, Agarkar urged patience. “I just explained his performances have made us pick him in the format that he’s excelled over the last couple of seasons of the IPL. With regards to red ball, I mean, he’s a kid. He’s just starting his journey, and I’m sure when the domestic season starts and he plays for his team, plays a bit of red-ball cricket, we will wait and observe. At this point why jump the gun?”
Looking Ahead
The immediate focus remains on integrating Sooryavanshi into the T20 environment. The BCCI coaching staff and selectors are committed to providing him with the necessary guidance to ensure his talent translates effectively to the international stage. “We’re very excited with what he’s doing in T20 cricket,” Agarkar added. “Hopefully, us as selectors or the BCCI and the coaching staff can help him push in the right direction. At this point, we’re just focused on what he can bring to the T20 team, and we’ll take one step at a time.” As the cricketing world turns its eyes toward the upcoming series, all eyes will be on whether the teenage prodigy can maintain his explosive form against the intensity of international bowling lineups.
