Virat Kohli: The Reliable Constant
Virat Kohli has effectively silenced any lingering doubts regarding his form. Following another stellar performance in the latest IPL season, Kohli has solidified his status as the cornerstone of the Indian ODI batting lineup. His commitment to the 50-over format remains absolute, and he is confirmed to be available for the upcoming series against Afghanistan. As one of the few veterans who has transitioned exclusively to the ODI format, his role is considered vital for India’s tactical approach.
Rohit Sharma Under the Microscope
While Kohli earns praise, the situation surrounding Rohit Sharma is markedly different. Selectors have expressed a growing, cautious concern regarding the captain’s physical readiness. Rohit’s IPL season has been hampered by a recurring toe injury—sustained during a clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru—and a subsequent hamstring issue. These setbacks have restricted him to just seven appearances out of twelve for the Mumbai Indians.
Of particular concern to the selection panel is Rohit’s role within his IPL franchise, where he has been utilized primarily as an Impact Player. This role allows him to avoid the rigors of fielding for a full 20 overs. Selectors are now questioning whether he possesses the necessary fitness to field for a full 50-over duration in an international ODI match, which is a significant factor in their evaluation for the upcoming series.
Managing Pace and Workload
The selectors are also adopting a protective stance toward ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Given his history of injury management, there is a reluctance to rush him back into action during the Afghanistan series, especially with a crucial limited-overs tour to England on the horizon. The selection meeting is expected to address several other pressing concerns, with reports suggesting that the panel is prepared to make some difficult calls. In the Test setup, there is talk of bringing in Devdutt Padikkal to challenge for the No. 3 spot, as incumbent Sai Sudharsan has struggled with consistency.
Behind the stumps, shifts are also likely. Dissatisfaction with Rishabh Pant’s recent form has opened the door for Sanju Samson, who is tipped to replace him as the secondary wicketkeeping option behind first-choice KL Rahul. Meanwhile, the prospect of Shreyas Iyer taking over the captaincy in limited-overs formats, which had circulated in media circles, does not appear to be on the immediate agenda.
The squad is expected to feature fresh talent as well. Jammu & Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi is in line for his maiden Test call-up following his heroic role in his state’s historic Ranji Trophy victory. Additionally, Prince Yadav is being considered for the ODI squad, rewarding his impactful performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the IPL.

The transition from the IPL to international cricket will be swift. The one-off Test is scheduled to begin on June 6 at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. The ODI series follows with a match in Dharamsala on June 14, followed by games in Lucknow on June 17 and Chennai on June 20.
